One of the feats to see a major overhaul is Durable. While the previous version of Durable was focused on improving a character’s ability to recover hit points during a Short Rest, the new version is all about on-the-fly survivability in the heat of combat.
The new Durable feat is a “General” feat, available to all classes starting at level 4. It offers a trio of benefits designed to keep a character standing when they’re taking a beating:
This new take on Durable provides a much-needed in-combat healing option that doesn’t rely on spell slots or external healing from other party members. It’s particularly effective for martial characters who are often on the front lines and don’t have access to healing spells. A Barbarian, for example, can use this feat to regain up to 12 hit points (from a d12 Hit Die) as a bonus action, effectively doubling their survivability while raging.
While Durable may not be as flashy as other feats, its reliable benefits make it a solid choice for any character looking to improve their staying power and reduce their reliance on a party’s healer. The ability to use Hit Dice mid-combat, combined with the advantage on death saves, makes Durable a strong contender for a front-line character’s feat selection.
The 2014 Durable feat was a half-feat, granting a +1 to Constitution and a niche benefit that applied only during a Short Rest. The benefit was: “When you roll a Hit Die to regain hit points, the minimum number of hit points you regain from the roll equals twice your Constitution modifier (minimum of 2).”
This meant the feat was highly conditional. Let’s break down the probability. For a character with a +3 Constitution modifier, the minimum healing was 6. With a d10 Hit Die (like a Fighter’s), you would only see a benefit if you rolled a 1, 2, or 3 on the die, as a roll of 4 or higher would naturally yield a result of 6 or more (4+3=7). This made the feat only useful roughly 30% of the time, and only when you were already out of combat and in a safe place to rest.
In contrast, the 2024 Durable feat completely reworks this. It still grants the +1 to Constitution and has a new feature, Defy Death, which gives you advantage on all Death Saving Throws. This is a massive statistical boon, as it significantly reduces the chance of a character dying from failed death saves. The probability of succeeding on a death save is increased from 50% to 75% .
The most impactful change, however, is the Speedy Recovery feature. As a bonus action, you can expend a Hit Die and regain hit points equal to the roll. The key here is that this can be used in combat. While you don’t add your Constitution modifier to the roll, the ability to heal mid-fight without expending a spell slot is an incredible advantage. The 2014 version offered no in-combat utility at all.
Ultimately, the 2024 Durable feat shifts from a low-impact, out-of-combat niche to a powerful, universally applicable tool for survivability. It’s no longer just about optimizing a Short Rest; it’s about staying on your feet when it matters most.
